Who the hell is doing these girl-targeted video game ads? Because it isn’t girls who play video games, or anyone who’s ever spoken to such girls. The ones with Carrie Underwood, America Ferera and Liv Tyler are so-so. But this is only a recent revelation. Once upon a time, they were outright bad – until I saw something even worse.
Seriously, Animal Crossing: City Folk. I know there’s a market for games in which you buy virtual clothes for virtual people (Maple Story, etc). But there is no way to make it seem fun, let alone pass it off as some kind of social activity that replaces actual shopping. I know some boys enjoy playing virtual sports over real sports, but this is just not the same.
May I be so bold as to make two suggestions to you, video game industry: First, if you have a game of gender-free appeal (Mario Kart, RPGs, puzzle games, strategy games), just show us what you do in it. Second, make some games that actually appeal to women – not puppy and kitty lovefests or virtual Pilates, but the sort of stuff you’re already making, only with female protagonists with substance and appeal. I know it’s historically been really hard for you to think “women” and “appeal” and not immediately go to, and stop at, T&A. But I believe in you. You can do it.
